When Christ at a symbolic moment was establishing His great society, He chose for its cornerstone neither the brilliant Paul nor the mystic John, but a shuffler, a snob, a coward – in a word, a man. And upon this rock He has built His Church, and the gates of Hell have not prevailed against it. All the empires and the kingdoms have failed, because of this inherent and continual weakness, that they were founded by strong men and upon strong men. But this one thing, the historic Christian Church, was founded on a weak man, and for that reason it is indestructible.
For no chain is stronger than its weakest link.
– G.K. Chesterton, Heretics
Let’s face it, this has been a tough year for the pilgrim Church on earth. And precisely for that reason, we must not retreat; rather, we must re-commit even more to our vocations as Catholics knowing that the fullness of the Faith of the Church derives not from man but from God. It is in that vein, that once again we are reaching out for your support recognizing that this apostolate at Newman’s Bookshoppe is a shared apostolate with you!
Measured in the eyes of the world, this has been a difficult year for Newman’s Bookshoppe. However, the commitment of our supporters and the evangelistic zeal of our staff has never been greater. And the fruits of that commitment and zeal is borne out by the many Catholics and non-Catholics, agnostics, atheists, seekers and the curious who find at Newman’s Bookshoppe thousands of books, videos, recordings and religious goods that are uniformly catechetical, evangelical and devotional—each in its own way a guidepost to that real Hope which the world desperately needs and for which we long and prepare this Advent. In this annual appeal to our supporters, we are asking first and foremost, please shop at Newman’s this Christmas and throughout the year. As in past years, our funds from operations are not sufficient to cover all of the costs associated with Newman’s Bookshoppe and the programs of the Catholic Information Center. We operate on a bare-bones budget relying extensively upon volunteers and the contributions of faithful supporters like you.
Please consider making a tax deductible contribution (the CIC is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization) by completing the form below and returning this letter in the enclosed envelope.
And, of course, if you would like to speak to me about our activities and this request, email me or contact me by phone directly. May God bless you during this Advent Season.
